Twillingate is an easy and quick fix when we need a bit of salt breeze, an iceberg (if we’re lucky) and a perfect coffee from the Crow’s Nest Café.

Mother Nature was celebrating Mother’s Day in Wild Cove as we were heading through. Even one of  the iceberg tour boats was out taking advantage of the chance to take out some early customers.

From Long Point look out we could see lots of pack ice on the horizon and icebergs mixed in. A local fisherman was telling us his boat had brought in their crab pots twice already due to heavy ice and they are trying to get one more trip to meet their quota of crab for the season. He didn’t appreciate the ice at all and was looking to see if there was a chance to get out again.

The Titantic display deck offered a great venue to watch Twillingate Adventure Tours take a spin around a large berg before heading out to the next one. I was wishing I’d known they were sailing until the wind started to cut through my spring jacket. Just as well I wasn’t on the boat. Looked like a bit of rock and roll on the go too but I’m sure the excitement was keeping folks warm on the boat.

Chili and a great coffee are part of our Twillingate routine now. The Crow’s Nest Café in Crow Head is always excellent. Consistant and delicious. Ted even called me by name today. We’re Facebook friends since competing in an online auction recently.

We weren’t seated long when a lady at the next table asked my name. She recognized me from recently becoming Facebook friends too but we’ve had email conversations a number of times. Although we’d never met, we ‘virtually’ knew each other on sight. I’ve been admiring her work for a while now and offering unsolicited feedback. Can’t help myself.

Janet and her husband Richard are the hard working owners of The Old Salt Box Co. with restored and renovated rental properties in six Newfoundland outports. (Now 8 locations 2017)  With a total of 10 houses now they are creating rental space and employment for local workers who clean and maintain the properties. They live in Joe Batts Arm, Fogo Island but were out being tourists today too.

We had a great visit and I’m even more looking forward to out stays in their newest properties in Musgrave Harbour and Greenspond. These houses are still under construction but offer the amazing ocean views that are the trademark of their properties. We saw 3 icebergs on the horizon in front of the Greenspond property last week.

Richard is the overseer and planning guy and Janet marketing and reservations and is expecting furniture tomorrow for the newest houses. Smart and hard working is what I expected and got when we met accidentally.

Richard mentioned an iceberg potential in Merritt’s Harbour near their rental there. He knows I’m a bit of an ice addict.

We managed to catch our friends at home in Durrell and had a lovely visit and catch up. They told us about a new rental house in Twillingate and arranged a peek for us. The Pink House is traditional 100 year old Newfoundland home with 4 bedrooms upstairs. Currently set up with a double and two single beds and a small cot for a child, it’s a great property for a family or two couples at a reasonable rate. There is a cradle and a high chair and the beach is a three minute stroll. There are laundry facilities for a longer stay.

We backtracked to Durrell again so I could walk the dump road to see if I could get a picture of a large iceberg near Spillars Cove. I walked out part of the trail and could see nothing but my spidey senses were tingling. A little detour on a couple of hills got me a pretty good view. Success!

It’s always a long walk back than out to an iceberg for some reason.

Pushing my Mother’s Day luck, I even got  a requested detour to Merritt’s Harbour and a lovely view of a small berg right in the Harbour. Not quite visible from the huge window of Daisy’s House, you could take a few steps in your slippers and see it. Probably visible from the bedroom upstairs though.

My latest housework avoidance trick is a new Facebook page called Newfoundland Iceberg Reports. By the time I got my pictures posted others had come in from Bonavista, Elliston and Pouch Cove.
