Remembering just how fortunate we are

Just got back from the ceremony at the Gander Memorial Heritage Park  which incorporates the Cenotaph as well as other monuments. It will eventually include a monument about Sergeant Gander and such events as Gander’s response to 9/11 and the Arrow Air Crash.

We live in a country where we have the best rights and freedoms in the world.

It`s not because we deserve them. Everyone deserves them.

It`s because we`ve made them priority, we`ve elected governments (and rejected others) that made them priority and because we`ve stood up and defended them.

We`ve also stood up and defended them for others and unless your family tree can`t be traced to another country, those others are our families too and our ancestors were fortunate to come here and we should continue to help and welcome others.

Thank you to all those who serve including their families. Lest we forget.

    1. The new Park is really beautiful. Next year there will be a monument to Sergeant Gander, a Newfoundland Dog that won the Dicken’s Medal and a Compassion monument related to 9/11, the Czech crash and the Arrow Air crash. I need to make another donation because it is such a worthy project.

  1. I was in Gander in the Royal Rifles of Canada 73 years ago when we adopted the dog “Pal” and changed his name to “Gander”. I fought in the Battle of Hong Kong where Gander met his heroic end.
All this is to say that I am mightily impressed with the work of the committee in creating a lovely park. Many Thanks.
